A few questions about mail order cannabis seeds

Is it safe to order cannabis seeds through the mail?

People always wonder about the legal risk of purchasing cannabis seeds through the mail. Legitimate seed vendors (including those we recommend) ship discreetly to most locations. Seeds can be stopped by customs, but this doesn’t happen often. You also want to make sure that wherever you decide to purchase your seeds will also ship to your country. This information should be transparent and available on the vendor’s website.

Where can I buy cannabis seeds safely?

There are a number of good seed vendors out there. Our recommendations are established companies with great customer reviews so you know you’re purchasing quality cannabis seeds.

Beware of cannabis Seed Scams

If you’re contacted via social media to purchase seeds, chances are you’ve been targeted for a scam. We recommend using established cannabis seed vendors such as those linked below.

Before You Purchase

Questions you should ask before purchasing Cannabis seeds online
  • Do you recognize the name of the cannabis seed company name? Branding goes a long way and a recognized, established brand is something to consider when purchasing Cannabis seeds online.
  • What are customers saying in their reviews? Did they receive their seeds? Were they high quality?
Researching these questions will increase your chances of being happy with your Cannabis seed purchase.
  • Do you know anybody who has used them as their Cannabis seed supplier?
Word of mouth recommendations are very powerful in the cannabis community. Someone else's first hand experience can be helpful if you aren't sure about which brand of Cannabis seeds to purchase.
  • What’s their return or refund policy?
A good seed shop should at least have generally positive reviews and a well-defined refund or exchange policy.

Assessing Seed Health

A good seed vendor should only ship out quality seeds. Here is what to look for when you receive your seeds to assess their overall health.

  • Dark color with stripes or spots (white or green seeds are too immature to sprout).
  • Waxy, shiny coating: While not critical, this is a sign that the seed is healthy.
  • Hard shell: You should be able to apply light finger pressure without the seed cracking. If the seed buckles under light pressure, the seed is either infertile or dead.
  • No cracks: Healthy seeds will have their seed coat intact without damage. Check for holes too, as insect pests may dig into seeds for the delicious starch.

Marijuana Seed Strain FAQs

Is it legal to ship marijuana seeds through the mail? I don't want to get arrested.

This varies, so research the laws in your jurisdiction about shipping cannabis seeds through the mail. Most reputable vendors ship discretely and there are no issues.

What are the best marijuana seeds to buy?

This depends on your budget, available time to grow, and your level of experience. There are advantages to “regular” seeds as they typically result in a larger harvest but you will have to plan for only half of the seeds being female. Feminized strains will give you nearly 100% female plants, but you pay a little more for the convenience.

Where can I buy the best cannabis seeds online?

There are a number of great online seed shops. All of our recommendations come from professional cannabis growers, medicinal patients, personal experience, and customer reviews.

What’s the difference between autoflower and regular cannabis seeds?

Autoflower seeds begin to flower according to their age. “Regular” seeds flower in response to a change in the light cycle. Autoflowering strains are “easier” in the sense that you don’t have to switch the light cycle, they just start flowering when they’re ready.

What’s the difference between regular marijuana seeds and feminized marijuana seeds?

Feminized seeds have been bred and treated to nearly 100% female. They cost a bit more but you don’t have to worry about throwing out the half of your plants that turn out male.

Are feminized cannabis seeds worth the price?

When you buy feminized seeds you can be confident that nearly 100% of your plants will be female. Feminized seeds are definitely worth the price if the idea of sexing your plants and removing the males isn't for you.

Are some cannabis seed strains easier to grow than others?

Yes. As mentioned above, autoflowering strains are easy to grow due to their simple light requirement. Some regular seeds are not much more difficult as long as you can control the light cycle. A few other strains, typically regular seed strains, can have very specific nutrient, watering, temperature, and humidity needs.

What strains are good for growing marijuana indoors? What seed strains are good for growing marijuana outdoors?

There are many good strains suited for indoor growing and just as many good seed strains for outdoor cultivation. You have to consider the space you’re growing in. Outdoor marijuana strains will grow tall and may not be suitable for you indoor grow. The main consideration when deciding between indoor and outdoor is the amount of space. An “outdoor” strain will grow fine indoors, as long as it has enough room.

The Lowdown on High-CBD Strains

In this contributor article, Nic Dobija-Nootensof CBD Hacker provides the knowledge about high-CBD cannabis strains.

When you want to harness the CBD found in cannabis, there are a lot of variables to consider.

Different cannabis varieties can be grown with a range of CBD levels, and high-CBD strains that contain enough THC to be categorized as “marijuana” can offer different benefits than high-CBD hemp.

So, if you want to take advantage of all that high-CBD cannabis has to offer, and you want to understand what constitutes high-CBD, follow along through our helpful guide.

WHAT IS HIGH-CBD CANNABIS?

Don't be confused. Read on!

It can be tricky to determine when to label a cannabis strain as “high CBD.” That’s because there is not a universal threshold that qualifies. And depending on the relative amount of THC in a strain, you may notice the effects of the CBD more or less than cannabis strains with less THC.

When people talk about cannabis, they generally tend to focus on THC levels, rather than CBD levels. For instance, depending on its THC levels, a cannabis plant is classified as either marijuana or hemp. Marijuana plants can have THC levels as low as 10 percent and as high as 25 percent or even 28 percent. Hemp plants, however, are legally required to have much lower levels of THC, around 0.3 percent.

It’s common for marijuana strains to have low levels of CBD. Purple Kush, for instance, averages less than 1 percent CBD, and Blue Dream averages between 1-2 percent CBD.

So, compared to typical marijuana strains, a relatively high-CBD strain could simply be anything higher than 2% CBD. But in order to feel its effects more strongly, high-CBD marijuana will generally have higher CBD levels, closer to 5% CBD.

Hemp is often grown with higher CBD content, so a high-CBD hemp strain would have much more CBD than a high-CBD marijuana strain.

When looking for high-CBD cannabis, it’s important to first see if you want marijuana or hemp. If you want a high THC content, then you’d look at marijuana strains with CBD levels between 2-5 percent. If you don’t want much THC, then look for hemp strains.

WHY PEOPLE USE HIGH-CBD STRAINS

You might be interested in high-CBD cannabis if you want to take advantage of CBD’s many therapeutic properties. High-CBD cannabis can help with relieving minor aches and pains or sleeplessness, as well as more serious conditions like epilepsy or opioid addiction. But depending on the intended use, you may want different amounts of CBD.

For people treating epilepsy, they may need really high-CBD hemp strains like Charlotte’s Web, Remedy, and Avidekel, that have between 10-20 percent CBD. But for those treating less severe health conditions, or who just want relaxing effects, they may not need such high levels.

Ultimately, everyone’s body reacts to CBD slightly differently, so finding the CBD levels that work best for you will take some experimenting. You may see that you get the desired effects from lower levels of CBD, or you may see that you really benefit from much higher levels of CBD.

HIGH-CBD MARIJUANA

When looking for high-CBD marijuana strains, it’s best to look at the ratios of THC to CBD rather than simply the amount of CBD. When THC and CBD are combined, they can enhance each other’s therapeutic properties. This is part of a phenomenon known as the “entourage effect.”

This is not the kind of entourage we're talking about

If you’re using marijuana but want to tamper down the “high” from THC, you might prefer a high-CBD strain. That’s because high amounts of CBD should mellow out the THC’s psychoactive effects. A strain like Harlequin, which has a CBD to THC ratio of 5:2, would be good for this.

But if you want to keep the full psychoactive effects of THC, you might prefer a lower CBD to THC ratio. In that case, the CBD and THC should work together to help with whichever therapeutic relief you’re seeking. But the low level of CBD won’t dampen the THC’s “high.” A strain like Pennywise, which has a 1:1 CBD to THC ratio, is perfect for this.

HIGH-CBD HEMP

You may be familiar with hemp as a manufacturing material for things like tote bags and clothes. However, hemp is also grown as a source of CBD. High-CBD hemp strains are great for anyone looking for the therapeutic benefits of CBD without the psychoactive “high” that comes from THC.

The most well-known strain of high-CBD hemp is Charlotte’s Web. This strain was developed to treat epilepsy and has around 12 percent CBD. Another notable high-CBD strain is Avidekel. This has close to 16 percent CBD and has, supposedly, zero THC, which would be the lowest THC level of any cannabis plant today.

HOW PEOPLE CONSUME HIGH-CBD STRAINS

High-CBD marijuana strains are typically consumed as a smokable flower, or in extracts, edibles, or other products. They can essentially be treated like regular marijuana, except the “high” you would get from smoking them will not be as potent as marijuana with lower CBD levels.

While high-CBD hemp strains are usually consumed as extracted CBD oil, certain ones can also be smoked or vaporized. Traditional hemp was not potent enough for this delivery method, but some newer strains contain enough cannabinoids in the flower to make inhalation effective.

The Advantages of Dry Fluid Cooling

With cannabis going legal in Canada as of October 2018, many cannabis enthusiasts expected a dwindling supply. That makes sense; it’s cold up north! Cannabis needs a lot of good light, something not always associated with higher latitudes, but over one hundred licenses have been doled out to Canadian growers. Additionally, the fact that Canadians spent a billion dollars on Cannabis in 2018 demonstrates that the strong demand doesn’t dwindle as winter arrives. But how can a cultivator stay profitable through the winter? Like most dynamic industries, adaptation is key. In cannabis that means indoor facilities with environmental controls that allow cultivators to grow (and harvest) through the winter.

Indoor cultivation isn’t cheap. Any experienced grower is going to know that there are a number of additional expenses when cultivating indoors and a cold environment presents many of its own challenges. No matter what the weather is doing outside, an indoor facility is going to need to control for temperature and humidity throughout the year, and this requires the right equipment to maintain consistent yields. However, if the system is properly designed, cultivators can utilize those cold temperatures to improve their climate control efficiency. How? By utilizing dry fluid coolers in these facilities, growers can use ambient outdoor temperatures without the worry of bringing in contaminated air from outside.

A caravan of Canadian cannabis cultivators snowshoeing to their grow op. Not really, but you get the point. It's cold!

The advantages of a chilled water climate control system include flexibility and overall savings in costs, but another major advantage to cold climate growing is the ability to integrate dry fluid coolers. To cool a grow facility, the cultivator doesn’t add cold, but rather removes heat and this is how chilled water is used - it allows for heat exchange, in which the cold water absorbs the heat from the air and is then shunted outside via a chiller or chiller bank and refrigeration circuit.

The biggest energy drain in nearly every cooling system are the compressors. It doesn’t matter how energy efficient your facility is, compressors will be the number one consumers of energy, and this is where cold environments can work to the grower’s advantage. A dry fluid cooler allows growers to bypass the compressors all together as long as temperatures are low enough (35 degrees F/1.67 degrees C). If this is the case, cultivators can take advantage of the free cooling they get by using ambient temperatures to remove heat via a chilled water circuit. There’s also the added benefit of using this setup for humidity control. This system operates within a closed loop, meaning the water isn’t exposed to the air or being consumed (hence “dry fluid”), and often in these cases the refrigeration equipment doesn’t need to be able to operate optimally in low temperatures since the dry cooler is doing most of the cooling work. This can significantly reduce equipment and maintenance costs.

In colder climates like those experienced in Canada and the northern US, indoor facilities have allowed cultivators to grow and sell their product all year long. In these types of applications, dry coolers reduce energy costs and can pay for themselves in half a year’s time. This is a major advantage to cultivators who are not only trying to grow the best plants they can, but trying to do it year-round, no matter what the weather.

Growers Network strongly urges you obey all local ordinances regarding cannabis seed sales and cannabis cultivation. We don't advocate breaking the law!

Hello and welcome back! We continue our discussion about cannabis seeds with an introduction to short strains that are great for a grow room or grow tent. Our recommendations may be small, but they pack a punch!

First things first: Common Concerns when buying cannabis seeds online

So you’ve set up your grow. You’ve got lights, soil, all your nutrients, proper airflow, now you just need to decide what strain you’d like to grow. While there are many variables to consider - regular vs. autoflowering, feminized or non-feminized, Sativa vs. Indica - there’s one that you may not have considered, and that is the size of your growing space. So why consider the space, Cannabis is Cannabis, right? Not exactly. As a general rule of thumb, Sativa dominant seeds will grow into taller plants than those you cultivate from Indica seeds. Again, this is a general rule, but it’s an important thing to consider when you’re planning which Cannabis strain to grow. So today what we’ve got for you are a mix of strains that will be ideal for your small grow.

A couple considerations regarding Cannabis seeds

Feminized Seeds

If you don’t know what feminized seeds are, they are cannabis seeds that have been treated with colloidal silver or a silver thiosulfate solution that causes them to be “feminine” or female. Why is this important to you? Well, with feminized seeds you can be certain that the seeds you purchase will produce flowers (buds) when they mature, rather than releasing pollen which s what mature males do. So the advantage is two-fold, you won’t have to discard your male plants because you won’t have any, and you can be sure that the plants you grow will provide you a seedless harvest.

Autoflowering Seeds

Unlike “regular” cannabis seeds which begin to flower when we the indoor grower changes the light cycle, autoflowering seeds require no change in the light cycle and will begin to flower when they’re old enough. It’s important to also mention that autoflowering seeds tend to bud faster than those that require a change in the photoperiod so they’re great cannabis seeds if you’re short on time (or maybe just a little impatient, like me!)

Afghan Hash Plant Feminized Cannabis Seeds

Afghan Hash Plant is a popular strain from Canuk Seeds. This pure landrace Indica strain has a spicy, hashy aroma with a woody taste and undertones of vanilla. These seeds are feminized but not autoflowering so you will have to shorten the light cycle when the plants are ready for flowering. Afghan Hash Plant will flower in 8-9 weeks and if you are using cannabis medicinally, it’s a great strain for the treatment of anxiety, depression, insomnia, lack of appetite, and pain. This one is a heavy hitter with up to 24% THC.

Blue Cheese Feminized Cannabis Seeds

Blue Cheese is an Indica/Sativa hybrid known for its copious amounts of resin. This short strain tops out at 80cm and has been stabilized for consistent characteristics, including its pungent aroma. Blue Cheese flowers in 8 weeks and has a high level of THC. You need these feminized seeds!

Sweet Tooth Autoflowering Feminized Cannabis Seeds

This short strain was bred by crossing Sweet Tooth with Lowryder #2. Sweet Tooth autoflowering cannabis seeds provide a larger yield than most autoflowering varieties, and takes about 10 weeks to go from seed to flower. Sweet Tooth’s buds are sugar coated with trichomes (hence the name) and it’s a great strain for headaches and stress, or it’s great just for a chill night on the couch.

White Widow Autoflowering Feminized Seeds

The classic White Widow is now available as an autoflowering feminized strain. The frosted white buds are a hallmark of this strain and an indication of it’s powerful effects. Known for a powerful feeling of euphoria, White widow is great for socializing with friends or just getting a creative boost. This one flowers in 8 weeks and has a THC content of over 20%.

Original Afghani #1 Regular Seeds

The last cannabis seed on our list is not an autoflower or feminized. This means you’ll have to give a little more TLC when you grow. First, since it is not feminized, you’ll need to remove any males before they reach maturity and can pollinate your females. Secondly, since it’s not autoflowering, you’ll have to change up the light cycle when you’re plants are ready to flower. However, if this doesn’t sound too daunting, Original Afghani #1 seeds flower in only about fifty days and have a mid-high THC level at 17%. And since this is one of the few original, stable landrace Indicas, Original Afghani #1 is also great if you’re looking to do your own cross breeding.

M&F Talent Cannabis Career Tip of the Month: Working for Plant Touching Businesses

In this contributor article, Kent Gruetzmacher of Mac & Fulton Talent Partners talks about the challenges and benefits of working in a "plant touching business."

The following is an article produced by a contributing author. Growers Network does not endorse nor evaluate the claims of our contributors, nor do they influence our editorial process. We thank our contributors for their time and effort so we can continue our exclusive Growers Spotlight service.

As an industry leading recruiting agency, Mac & Fulton Talent Partners have an inside look at the challenges face by job searchers in the cannabis space. To this end, M&F Talent takes great pride in helping individuals understand their place in the cannabis market. M&F Talent has partnered with Grower’s Network to help job searchers and cannabis professionals alike find success in this exciting new industry.

When looking to enter the cannabis industry on a professional level, there are several variables which should be considered. The most important of these elements concerns exactly what part of the cannabis industry one chooses to work in.

The cannabis industry present several distinct verticals of employment - these include plant touching businesses, cannabis ancillaries, hydroponics products, and the hemp market. For M&F Talent’s cannabis career tip for March, we are discussing the perks and challenges of working with plant touching businesses.

What are Plant Touching Businesses?

For those that did not know, the term “plant touching” is used to describe any business that directly handles cannabis plants or products. That being said, all jobs within the plant touching category are directly related to the cannabis flower in one fashion or another. Generally speaking, plant touching jobs are those that come to mind when people think about working in the cannabis industry. On that note, cultivation businesses and cannabis dispensaries offer a large percentage of plant touching jobs that are available on the market today, these roles include growers, budtenders, and trimmers.

As the industry continues to evolve, there are also a number of lesser known career paths arising with plant touching businesses. For starters, well educated plant scientists are finding jobs in tissue culture labs, as they propagate cannabis plants without either seeds or cloning. Similarly, organic chemists are being hired for extraction laboratory positions, where Good Manufacturing Practices and safety are increasingly in demand. Looking beyond that, transportation, processing, compliance, sales, and operations for cannabis companies all fall within the plant touching vertical. Moreover, as the industry matures with legalization efforts, plant touching jobs are becoming increasingly professionalized and corporatized with national, vertically integrated cannabis businesses.

What are the Benefits of Working for Plant Touching Businesses?

Plant touching businesses are at the “front of the pack” for the green rush, they immediately populate new market opportunities as they arise. Therefore, plant touching business are the first to create new jobs within new locales of the cannabis industry. After that, other verticals such as cannabis ancillaries and hydroponics products follow suit to service new plant touching businesses. Looking at all employment sectors in the cannabis industry, plant touching businesses are experiencing the most rapid growth and offering the most new employment opportunities.

Plant touching careers appeal to a certain type of individual, usually those who enjoy working closely with cannabis plants, flowers, products, or medicine. As such, those who feel an internal draw to cannabis advocacy efforts are well suited for plant touching jobs. Similarly, job searches with a passion for horticulture generally fall within the plant touching vertical, as it is strictly these businesses that offer cultivation jobs. Finally, those individuals with an entrepreneurial mindset are well-suited for the plant touching vertical, as each cannabis company in operation today is essentially a startup.

What are the Challenges of Working for Plant Touching Businesses?

While the plant touching segment offers ample employment opportunity, it also presents more challenges than seen working in other verticals. For starters, as cannabis is still federally illegal, plant touching jobs pose more legal risk than any other vertical. While the federal government seems to be respecting State’s rights concerning the cannabis trade, the threat of legal prosecution still looms in the back of many people’s minds.

The cannabis industry is comprised of disparate market segments that arise with legalization efforts in new parts of the country. This “patchwork” of legal markets also presents unique challenges for working in the cannabis space. Of particular interest to job searchers is the fact that plant touching businesses in the U.S. can only expand as large as their State market model allows. Therefore, getting involved with a plant touching business at this point also puts an immediate “roof” on someone’s potential career progression.

Another consideration to make if one is thinking about working in the plant touching vertical has to do with compliance and legality. As the legal cannabis business is entirely new, front-running cannabis companies are working tirelessly to destigmatize the industry through best business practices. As such, plant touching businesses have a number of compliance controls built into their business models - these rules must be followed tirelessly at the workplace. Slight infractions can lead to termination, which could be a permanent mark on someone’s work history.

Growers Network would like to thank Kent and Mac & Fulton Talent Partners for taking the time to talk to us about plant touching businesses. Thank you!

Writer's Note: My seed recommendations are based on talks with growers, patients, as well as customer reviews and my own personal preference.

What are feminized cannabis seeds?

Marijuana, like most sexually reproducing plants, has two sexes. Since males are generally a waste of money unless your breeding, feminized cannabis seeds take the guesswork out of removing male plants before they are able to pollinate your females.

How are cannabis seeds feminized?

Cannabis seeds are feminized by spraying the seeds with colloidal silver or silver thiosulfate. This forces the cannabis seeds to feminize, or, “be female.”

Where to buy feminized cannabis seeds

There are a number of reputable vendors selling feminized cannabis seeds. A good seller will ship cannabis seeds in discreet packaging, offer some kind of refund if you happen to get bad seeds, and accept normal, secure methods of payment.

What are Autoflowering Cannabis Seeds?

If you already know the difference between autoflower and photoperiod cannabis seeds, you can skip this and check out my recommendations below. If you’re interested in regular seeds, check out some additional recommendations here. However, if autoflowering cannabis is a new term for you, fear not, it’s not that complicated.

Regular - meaning non-autoflowering - cannabis seeds will produce buds in response to a change in the light cycle. Typically, this means that when a grower is ready for their marijuana plants to flower, they switch their twenty-four hour light cycle from eighteen hours of light and six hours of dark (18-6) to twelve hours of light and twelve hours of darkness (12-12). This change in light duration signals the cannabis plant to start making buds since the waning light makes it “thinks” winter is coming.

autoflowering cannabis

Ned Stark says winter is coming, so you better start making some buds, plant!

Autoflowering cannabis seeds do not produce buds in response to a change in the photo-period they’re exposed to, they just do it when they’re ready so there’s no need to mess with your grow lights. Autoflowering seeds are sourced by crossing a strain with a subspecies of Cannabis called ruderalis. This wild form of cannabis is a natural autoflowering variety, and while not great for smoking, the crossbreeding results in a plant that produces quality flowers automatically. A major advantage to autoflowering seeds is that they will enter flowering quicker than cannabis grown from “regular seeds.” The drawback to these is that you’ll get a slightly smaller harvest since these plants tend to be smaller than marijuana grown from regular seeds. These seeds also tend to be a bit more expensive than regular seeds but that’s the price you pay for convenience.

So, are you ready to check out the details of some of the best autoflowering cannabis seeds available? Awesome, let’s go!

Sugar Mango Ryder Autoflowering feminized cannabis seeds (World of Seeds)

I saved this one for last because while it’s autoflowering, there’s a key difference here. This strain is autoflowering but also feminized. What does that mean? It means that you're virtually guaranteed to sprout only female cannabis plants, which is good since if you know growing, you know that males are no good for producing quality buds and need to be removed and destroyed as soon as they're identified. So as you can see, there's a great advantage to these cannabis seeds.

This autoflowering feminized Sugar Mango Ryder is one such strain. This mostly Indica strain is the result of a cross between Brazilian Santa Maria and C. ruderalis. Flowering in as few as fifty days, this strain has a fruity flavor and smell with hints of mango. This one also scores points for higher yields than your traditional autoflowering cannabis.

Using Biologicals as a part of an effective IPM Program

Do you want to be part of a private, professional community?
Join Now

In this article, we discuss IPM and talk about some of the best products for organic pest control.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is a collection of pest control strategies that put a premium on that “M,” the management of pests rather than indiscriminate spraying of pesticides. An IPM regimen will usually consist of the following steps:

1. Action Thresholds: Determine at what level a species becomes a problem. This could be at a certain amount of crop loss or economic damage.

2. Monitoring/Identification: What pests are present and in what kind of numbers? How do we identify the pest and watch for it?

3. Prevention: Manage space/environment to prevent infestations. This could be as simple as changing into work clothes on-site, or as complex as a negative pressure design to remove pathogens from a facility or room.

4. Control: When necessary, apply the least harmful technique available to reduce pests. By least harmful, we mean the fewer harmful chemicals used, the better.

The main advantage of an IPM regimen is that you’re monitoring for issues before they become major problems. In addition to being a proven strategy, IPM programs also include the benefits of less waste, reduced costs, and a reduced environmental impact compared to traditional pest control. But what about those situations when growers do have a problem that requires chemical intervention? Can you use chemicals and still consider your program IPM? "Yes" is the answer. Chemical intervention is a “last resort” of an IPM program, but rather than indiscriminate spraying of a broad use chemical, treatments within a good IPM program will be targeted to the specific pest. Additionally, a premium is put on products that are organic or biological in nature. But which products are good for an IPM program? How do they work? Today we’ll talk in-depth about a few effective products you can incorporate into your IPM program. It should be mentioned that each of the products discussed have been through years of testing before receiving EPA approval. Be sure to check out the references for more information!

Exile

Exile is an Insecticide/Fungicide/Miticide in one, and it's the only product of its kind, dueled registered as both an insecticide and fungicide. Utilizing Potassium Salts of Fatty Acids, Exile is approved for use on vegetables, tobacco, and flowering plants. What are these fatty acids? They’re naturally occurring, organic molecules sourced from a variety of plants such as palms and cotton seeds1. Exile works as the fatty acids are absorbed through the insect’s body wall and disrupts the cell membranes2,3. As mentioned, these fatty acids utilized in Exile are also toxic to a variety of fungi2,4. This low toxicity solution is safe for humans and animals when used as recommended,1 and the residues left post-harvest don’t exceed the levels found in the environment naturally5, 6.

Defguard

Defguard is widely used in the greenhouse world and is one of the few products registered for use on combustibles. Labeled for use on bortrytis (bud rot) and powdery mildew, Defguard’s active ingredient is the bacteria species Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. When added to the soil, this biofungicide kills competing species, even colonizing on the plants roots to prevent further fungal infections. These biofungicides have been found to be an appropriate, natural alternative to some more toxic pesticides7,8.

AzaMax

AzaMax is a broad spectrum control for insects and spider mites. The active ingredient is Azadirachtin, a hormone that serves as both an antifeedant and growth regulator, working by both starving pests and disrupting their biological development9. The double attack on pest species allows AzaMax to completely eradicate pests when used appropriately. Additional benefits include low toxicity and low environmental impact.

Prevasyn

Prevasyn is another biological control that has the ability to improve the efficacy of these other products. Rather than kill pest species, Prevasyn works as a natural deterrent10. The main ingredient is capsicum oleoresin, better known as pepper extract, and it's a compound bugs hate. When used appropriately, Prevasyn can prevent insects from laying eggs on leaves and in soil. With many growers focused on eradicating pests, Prevasyn's repellent qualities can be overlooked. This is where the synergy comes in, by aiding in reducing the number of pests around to begin with, any other product will be more effective on anything that remains and can reduce the number of pesticide applications - and the amount of product necessary - for adequate control. By creating a hostile environment for pests, Prevasyn is an effective pest mobilizer, forcing them to find their resources elsewhere.

The days of indiscriminate spraying of pesticides are over. In today's highly regulated pesticide market, a premium has been put on organic, biological products that are effective and reliable. Though a good IPM program requires more work than simply "spraying for bugs," the right products, when used appropriately, can not only control your pests, but work in tandem with one another, saving money, resources, and reducing the need for a more drastic intervention.

Is Your Indoor Growing Facility Fully Protected Against Contamination?

Do you want to be part of a private, professional community?

In this contributor article, Jeff Foster of Shoe Inn talks about the importance of protecting your facility against contamination.

The following is an article produced by a contributing author. Growers Network does not endorse nor evaluate the claims of our contributors, nor do they influence our editorial process. We thank our contributors for their time and effort so we can continue our exclusive Growers Spotlight service.

Of the 33 American states where marijuana has been legalized for medical or recreational use, the number one priority for all licensed commercial producers is to protect their crops from contamination. Likewise for those states, the main concern of government authorities mandated to protect marijuana users through stringent laboratory testing of licensed cannabis products is the hot topic issue of contamination.

GFarma News recently reported that:

”The Maine Medical Association calls marijuana contamination one of the most significant risks facing the legal market. Threats can range from E. coli poisoning to deadly lung infections...”

All states currently legalized, and the remaining ones expected to eventually legalize, no doubt share this concern.

As reported by the media, an increasing number of labs across America have been shut down by government authorities for intentionally publishing incorrect testing results. Aware of these media reports, legal marijuana users are finding it increasingly difficult to trust the sources from which to obtain their supply.

GFarma News recently stated that:

“In the high-stakes cannabis market, it’s obvious that testing companies — the pathway to the legal market — could be targets for abuse, either from unscrupulous producers eager to pay for favourable results, or labs willing to sweeten results to attract more business.”

The bottom line for licensed commercial producers is that consumer mistrust of their product quality is bad for business.

There are four essential ways commercial growers can ensure their crops are virtually 100% protected against microbial contamination, which we will examine momentarily. By ensuring their crops are protected against microbial contamination, and proving it to the public by passing government approved, licensed laboratory testing, producers can solidify marijuana consumer trust and continue successfully in the booming emerging cannabis market.

“Sterilization of the product does not necessarily ensure the product is completely safe for consumption.” -- Ed Rosenthal

Sterilization procedures using chemicals create a chain reaction of even more complex chemical contamination. If growers are correctly using preventative measures to eliminate microbial contamination from occurring in the first place, the dubious process of sterilization should not be necessary. This is painfully ironic when understanding that the simplest prevention measures (discussed below) could eliminate such serious threats from the very beginning.

Ed Rosenthal, one of the leading marijuana educators over the last four decades, makes the contamination danger explicitly clear when he points out that:

“Because the presence of microbial contaminants often results in the by-products of growth being left behind, sterilization of the product does not necessarily ensure the product is completely safe for consumption.

“Sterilization of the contaminated substance may kill live microbes, but it does not remove the presence of the microbes (DNA, proteins, and/or lipids left behind), or remove the toxins certain microbes leave behind. The DNA, lipids and proteins from microbial contaminants, whether pathogenic or non pathogenic, also have the potential of acting as antigenic determinants on their own, and could lead to a full range of allergy like reactions.

“If the cannabis contaminated with pesticides, mycotoxins or endotoxins is destined for extraction and concentration, there is a significant risk that the contaminants, particularly pesticides will be concentrated and become a greater problem for the end user.”

Long gone are the days of indiscriminate spraying , but contamination is still an issue.

In light of this, let’s take a look at the extensive, frightening types of microbial contamination that can ruin a crop.

Mr. Rosenthal states on his website (Ed Rosenthal.com) that:

“Recently, Steep Hill Labs collaborated with medical researchers at University of California, Davis Medical Center, and found that of 20 randomly selected samples submitted for testing at the Steep Hill Facility in Berkeley, California all had detectable levels of microbial contamination, and many had significant pathogenic micro-organism contamination. The variety of potentially harmful bacteria and fungi found was surprising and included:

  • Klebsiella, Pseudomonads (several, including P. aeroginosa)
  • Enterobacteria (including both pathogenic and non-pathogenic forms of E. coli)
  • Acinetobacter (several, including baumannii)
  • Aspergillus
  • Fusarium
  • Mucor
  • Penicillium
  • Botryotini
  • And many other bacteria and fungi

Some of the samples studied harbored multiple potentially pathogenic microorganisms (e.g., Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium, Enterobacter, Pseudomonas).”

These do not even include the chemical pesticides many indoor growers intentionally use inside of their facilities; however, those are outside the scope of this article. Here we are targeting the microbial forms of contamination that growers accidentally bring into their facilities.

So how do growers successfully eliminate microbial contamination risks?

Pharmaceutical grade medical cannabis can be produced using Good Growing Practices (GGP)

Mr. Rosenthal provides a thorough list of preventative microbial contamination measures all successful growers incorporate to ensure Good Growing Practices so that growers can be protected against microbial contamination:

“This requires:

  1. Clean grow rooms/green houses,
  2. Complete humidity and ventilation control,
  3. HEPA-filtered air systems, and
  4. Gowned workers wearing hair (face, hand, and foot*) covering; essentially the same practices used to produce pharmaceutical products. Without this infrastructure, it is impossible to avoid microbial contamination, which leads to pesticide usage.”

* The additional use of face, hand and foot coverings is the most recent development in state- of-the-art GGP contamination prevention measures that focus on using these additional pieces of protective covering. Modern GGP adheres to, and is in compliance with, European current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). World-class cannabis extraction facilities such as MediPharm in Canada create state-of-the-art cleanrooms and critical environments designed to ISO standards.

Bottom line: all of these world-class facilities start with the basics by employing hair, face, hand and foot coverings.

Shoe Inn provides products like the Shoe Inn Stay (L) and Fusion (R) automatic shoe cover dispensers.

One of the easiest ways growers can introduce pathogens and microbial contaminants into their facilities is by overlooking foot coverings. Allowing cannabis workers to walk into indoor growing facilities with unprotected footwear is a sure recipe for disaster as the soles of shoes, boots and sandals track in every form of contaminant possible.

Furthermore, supervisors and “Grow Masters” who do not insist on pharmaceutical grade foot coverings because they are too difficult or inconvenient to apply, virtually guarantee their own crop contamination.

Successful, contamination-free marijuana growing facilities choose Shoe Inn. Shoe Inn provides revolutionary patented dispensers and removers that make putting on, taking off and disposing of their shoe covers a breeze.

As Shoe Inn’s motto says: We make putting shoe covers on and taking them off faster, easier, safer and cleaner.™

Which Cannabis Seeds Strain should I grow?

Before we start, we need to talk about a few variables with regard to buying cannabis seeds for your grow, specifically, what's the difference among regular seeds, autoflowering seeds, and feminized seeds? Read on and consider the requirements of each of the following types of seeds to help you make the best purchase for your grow. There are advantages and drawbacks to each seed type.

REGULAR Cannabis SEEDS

"Regular" seeds are non-feminized and non-autoflowering. You should expect half of your plants from these seeds to be male and dispose of them before they can pollinate your females. Pollinated females produce lower quality buds that are full of seeds. Regular seeds require a change in the light cycle to begin producing flowers. Through vegetation, cannabis plants are typically exposed to daily cycle of 18 hours of light followed by 6 hours of darkness (18-6). When developed enough to enter flowering, the grower will switch the light cycle to 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness (12-12) until harvest time.

Autoflowering Cannabis Seeds

Autoflower seeds will grow plants that produce flowers (buds) when it's old enough; there is no changing of the light cycle to initiate flowering the way you do with regular seeds. Expect a higher price point for these cannabis seeds compared to "regular" seeds.

Feminized Cannabis Seeds

Feminized cannabis seeds are generated by spraying a healthy, female cannabis plant with colloidal silver or a silver thiosulfate solution. The process results in nearly 100% feminized seeds so there are no males to remove.

Note: 1 in 1000 feminized seeds may turn out to be male. Even though you are using feminized seeds you'll want to monitor your plants when the reproductive parts begin developing. Remember that these seeds are more expensive, but you won't waste the time and energy it takes to deal with male cannabis plants.

Autoflowering Feminized Cannabis Seeds

The best of all worlds? Possibly. Autoflowering, feminized cannabis seeds will flower without a change in the life cycle and will result in nearly 100% female plants. Like any autoflowering seed strain, you should expect a slightly smaller harvest than a crop of the same strain grown from "regular" seeds. And of course, the convenience of autoflowering marijuana seeds make them a bit more pricey.

And now for my recommendations!

Best Autoflowering Feminized & Regular Seeds

Northern Lights

This mostly indica cultivar flowers in about 50 days and is great whether you grow indoors, outdoors, or in a greenhouse. Northern lights gets high marks for growability and potency, with THC levels of 22%. Expect highly-resinous flowers and a sweet flavor.

As with many Indicas, Northern Lights will relax you to the point of couch lock which makes it a great strain if you're looking for the ultimate "chill" strain.

This depends on your budget, available time to grow, and your level of experience. Autoflower seeds begin to flower according to their age. “Regular” seeds flower in response to a change in the life cycle, i.e. when your plants are developed enough to flower, you would switch the light cycle from 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness (18-6) to 12 hours of light and twelve hours of darkness (12-12). Autoflowering strains are “easier” in the sense that you don’t have to switch the light cycle, they just start flowering when they’re ready.
