In this article, Growers Network explores some of the largest cannabis growers in North America as part of an ongoing look at the commercial cannabis industry as a whole.

Related Article: Are you curious about the total # of pounds produced in the US? Check out our estimate here.

If you feel there is a grow operation that is not listed but belongs on the list, or if any information is inaccurate, use the information below to contact us. We intend to keep this list updated through 2017 with the biggest cannabis operations!

Criteria for Selection

Since there are multiple ways to rank grow operations, many criteria were considered. Some of the possibilities included wet and dry biomass, pounds of wet and dry flower per harvest, number of plants, number of different strains, THC content (by percentage of dry mass), and more. Our preliminary research indicated that many companies are unwilling to disclose this information publicly.

In the end, we chose to use square footage and area of the grow operation(s) as an objective and verifiable measurement of size. We decided to make a distinction between the current largest grow operations and upcoming large grow operations. Many operations are currently expanding or entering the field, and our “Near Future” list ranks them by their projected operation size.

  • What are compost teas?

Compost teas, often shortened to just “tea,” are part of a new approach to plant nutrition and soil inoculation, where, rather than letting the microbial community develop by chance, growers deliberately inject preferred microbes and nutrients into their grow medium. As the name suggests, compost teas start with compost, which is an excellent source of nutrition for plants. However, the nutrition in compost is typically locked away inside large, complex organic molecules. Microbes inside compost break down the complex molecules into simpler molecules that plants can easily absorb.

A simple diagram demonstrating the relationship of soil bacteria with the environment.

Compost teas take plant nutrition a step further by nurturing microbial growth, improving the effectiveness of traditional compost. When compost teas are “brewed,” microbes are cultured in warm water with plenty of air: ideal conditions for growth and propagation. These microbes form symbioses with the plants, making them more vigorous, healthy, and resilient to stress, resulting in bigger, better yields.

  • The Grow-Off Basics

The Grow-Off intends to eliminate the subjectivity found in many cannabis competitions. To achieve this goal, every competing grower is given a clone of the same unknown strain of cannabis. They are allowed to raise the clone via whatever methods they believe are best and allowed by Colorado state law. The cannabis will then be collected in early February and submitted for laboratory testing. Based on the results of the laboratory testing, winners will be selected for Potency, Flavor, and Yield.
