Largest Cannabis Producers in North America (2017)

Growers Network is committed to spreading knowledge about all aspects of the commercial cannabis industry, including growing, dispensaries, extractions, and more. In this article, Growers Network explores some of the largest cannabis growers in North America as part of an ongoing look at the commercial cannabis industry as a whole.     Criteria for Selection

    Since there are multiple ways to rank grow operations, many criteria were considered. Some of the possibilities included wet and dry biomass, pounds of wet and dry flower per harvest, number of plants, number of different strains, THC content
    • (by percentage of dry mass), and more. Our preliminary research indicated that many companies are unwilling to disclose this information publicly. In the end, we chose to use square footage and area of the grow operation(s) as an objective and verifiable measurement of size. We decided to make a distinction between the current largest grow operations and upcoming large grow operations. Many operations are currently expanding or entering the field, and our “Near Future” list ranks them by their projected operation size.

    Ranking Methodology

    First, we needed to find all relevant large grow operations in North America. Most states and localities have different means of tracking information about grow operations, which made this process difficult. In addition, grow operations rarely advertise their presence and sometimes can only be found through knowing the right people. To identify grow operations, we conducted web searches, combed through news articles, and queried our contacts in the industry. Due to the aforementioned difficulties, our list of grow operations is woefully incomplete. To that end, should you know of a grow operation you feel belongs on this list, don’t hesitate to contact us. Next we gathered information for each grow operation on our list. This was complicated by the many laws that vary by region and sometimes limit the amount of information a company can disclose publicly. Additionally, because cannabis is still considered a Schedule I drug by the DEA, many grow operations in the United States fear for their security and will not disclose any information publicly. For most grow operations, we contacted them directly to ascertain their square footage and other information. A rare few operations had their information in the public sphere. Some of the operations we contacted declined to be in our article, and many operations did not return our calls and emails.

    Editor’s Note: These are the top 10 largest operations in Canada that we could find. When Canada’s new rules surrounding cannabis become official, we expect for new, large Canadian grow operations to spring up as well.

    #1 – Canopy Growth Corporation

    Canopy Growth Corporation is a company based out of Smith Falls, Ontario. They currently own Tweed, Tweed Farms, and Bedrocan Canada, which have grow operations of 168,000 square feet, 350,000 square feet and 52,000 square feet, respectively. Not all of Tweed’s potential square footage is in use yet, and is waiting to be expanded into. One of their properties is 40 acres in size and largely undeveloped. Company Information

    According to a recent article by Cannabis Business Times, their current facilities measure in at 100,000 square feet and they plan to add another 900,000 square feet. In addition this, Aphria is also an investor in other cannabis companies, and owns significant portions of other large cannabis producers, such as the #1 grow operation on the west coast: Copperstate Farms in Snowflake, Arizona.     #1 – Copperstate Farms

    Copperstate Farms is an Arizona-based company that bought an old 40 acre tomato greenhouse site with the intention of retrofitting it for growing cannabis. They’re currently operating only 5 of the 40 acres, with plans to expand to 10 acres in the near future. The company is difficult to reach and their website is obscure, but several news articles have been written about them. Company Information

    Editor’s Note: These are the projected largest growing operations in the near future (1-2 years), based on information gathered from investor information for these companies. Additionally, let it be noted that many of the companies mentioned in this article own large parcels of land that will remain undeveloped until they see sufficient demand. Our projections are only interested in land that is currently in development or is nearing development.

    #1 – Tied between Aphria and Americann

    Americann is currently constructing a facility measuring 1 million square feet according to an article from December, 2016 and their website. Based on our research, that makes them the largest projected growing operation. However, according to a recent article on Cannabis Business Times, Aphria is also expanding to reach a total of 1 million square feet, matching them with Americann’s construction.
