Lesson Transcript:
One of the most common questions is: “When do I water my plants and how much water do I give them?” and that’s a good question. Cannabis is a very thirsty plant; it needs a lot of water. But at the same time it hates to stand in a puddle and can drown if we give it too much water. So there’s no fixed rule of when to give water, I can’t say “water it every second day” because it all depends on how big the plants are and what stage they’re in, so instead I’m going to show you a technique on how you can decide for yourself if you should give water.
All you need is the back of your hand, the skin here is more sensitive than other areas. Does it feel a little bit cool? Even it it feels just a little bit cold, that means there’s enough water in the pot. But if it feels warm, that means the plant is thirsty and needs a drink. So when you’ve determined that the plant needs water, how much do you give it? You pour water slowly into the pot until it runs out at the bottom. It’s very important that whatever pots you are using are capable of releasing water at the bottom. These fabric pots will let excess water flow out and most flower pots have holes in the bottom for this purpose. I know that some of you may be growing in a bucket, if you do that you’ll need to drill some holes in the bucket to avoid your plants drowning. In this case here, the plant is now standing in a puddle. This is not great, and I have to remove the puddle.
By the way, while your plants are really small, they only need a little water, but once they get bigger they start needing more and more water until you’re watering them every day. If you forget to water your plants and the leaves are hanging down like this, just give them a good drink of water and they’ll be back up in ten minutes.
Alrighty! Now you know how to water your plants. And to make those plants strong and big and healthy, you need to put some plant food into this water, and that’s the topic of the next video. Hope to see you there!
